Coat and Generations

Coat types and generations explained for Bordoodles and Bernedoodles

There are three different specific coat types we produce here at Pacific Northwest Doodles. Curly coats, wavy coats, and straight coats. All of the dogs we breed here are Hypoallergenic.

The definition of Hypoallergenic is “relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.” Some of our dogs are more hypoallergenic or allergen friendly than others, but no dog will ever be completely allergen free. It is important to let us know if you experience allergies and we will work with you to try to find the best fit for your family. Most families that have experienced allergies in the past are not allergic to our dogs, but we have had two different situations over our entire breeding career where people have experienced some form of allergic response and have not been able to get a dog from us.

Coat Types

Straight coats present as cu/cu genetically. The level of shedding of a straight coat has to do with the combination of the IC locus. Our no curl Bordoodles and Bernedoodles are some of our highest sought after coat types.

Curl Gene

Wavy coats present as cuc/cu genetically. Our Wavy coat Bordoodles include all of our first generation pairings, as well as a percentage of all of our subsequent pairings. Cuc/cu dogs can vary from looking more straight to looking closer to a curly coat dog.

Curly Coats present as cuc/cuc genetically. Our double curl Bordoodle and Bernedoodles have such a sweet look to them and can have a more poodle look if they are groomed in such a way, but can also have that beautiful doodle look to them.

“Curly coat is inherited in an autosomal incomplete dominant fashion meaning that only one copy of the CuC variant is required to produce a curly coat. However, due to the incomplete dominant expression of the CuC variant, dogs with only one copy of the CuC variant (CuC/Cu) can have a "wavy" or moderately curly coat that is in the spectrum somewhere between a curly and a straight coat. Dogs with one copy of the CuC variant (CuC/Cu) are also carriers of the variant for straight coat (Cu) and can produce dogs with a straight coat if bred to another Cu carrier or straight coat dog. Therefore, dogs with two copies of Cu will have straight hair, dogs with two copies of CuC typically have a tight curly coat and dogs with one copy of Cu and one copy of CuC typically have a looser curl or wavy coat.”

Unfurnished dogs have no copies of furnishings and present genetically as IC/IC. All Bernese Mountain Dogs and Border Collies are IC/IC. These unfurnished dogs are also cu/cu (no copies of curl).

Furnishings Gene

One copy of furnishings. Presents genetically as F/IC. Dogs that have one copy of furnishings can present the same as dogs that have two copies because ‘F’ is dominant. All of our F1’s and some of our F1b and higher generations have only one copy of Furnishings.

Two copy of Furnishings. Presents genetically as F/F. Double furnished dogs present similarly to single furnished dogs. The combination of no curl, single curl, and double curl will make a difference with the different looks.

“The improper coat/furnishings (IC) Locus determines if a dog will have longer hair around the muzzle and eyebrows (facial furnishings) or a lack of furnishings (called improper coat in breeds for which facial furnishings are standard). A DNA variant in the RSPO2 gene, which functions in hair follicle development, results in the production of furnishings in multiple breeds and is found in all wire-haired dogs. A third variant at the IC locus has been identified and associated with “weak” furnishings that develop gradually into sparse and much less pronounced furnishings.”

Generations

  • F1 (First Generation)

First generation. Always 50% / 50% of what parent breeds are.

F1 Bordoodles have one parent that is a Poodle and one parent that is a Border Collie.

F1 Bernedoodles have one parent that is a Bernese Mountain Dog and one parent that is a Poodle

  • F1b

F1b Bordoodles and Bernedoodles have one parent that is a doodle (Bordoodle or Bernedoodle) and one parent that is a poodle.

Reverse F1b’s are where one parent is a doodle and the other is a Bernese Mountain Dog or Border Collie, but the risk of shedding is high and not something we have elected to breed here.

  • F2 (Second generation)

An F2 can be either an F1b bred to an F1, or an F1 to a F1.

We only breed F1 x F1b’s here as F1 x F1 can produce high shedding, unfurnished dogs.

F2’s are a wonderful option for families and can still retain a higher Border Collie or Bernese Mountain Dog percentage while keeping the incredible low shedding, hypoallergenic features.

  • F3 / Multigen

F3’s, also known as multigenerational, can produce coats similar to F1b’s and F2’s, and will take after their parents temperaments.

Wavy, straight and curly coats are possible, based on parents specific genetics.
